Between a high concentration of bloodshed in Orlando this weekend and a scheduled oral surgery that could actually free me up to sing the way I did when I was younger (without jaw problems and weird pronunciations due to said problems), I was motivated to put together some work that I'd been saving for a full album, plus some moments of improvisation, all recorded live in a bedroom in my apartment, to cap off an era of struggling to perform as a musician and singer, perhaps ushering in new opportunities to be more engaged with music than I've been able to be for the last seven years.

A lot of the lyrics are from an outpouring of bottled up feelings about sex and abuse and visibility and love that took over a rainy day in April, got me crying hard in front of someone I promised I'd never cry in front of.

The music all arrived today, without much planning at all, just going with an instinct to make music for survival. Hope is a dangerous word, but I'd like to think there's some of that in here too.

The spinet has been in my family for three generations. The synth (which is also responsible for the drum patterns and sound effects heard here) is a Yamaha MX49 that belongs to my friend, Dr. Steven Roberts.

This was all recorded today (15 June 2016) on my phone, no overdubs.

I thought of Anohni and James Blake (who is quoted, lovingly, on the track that includes his name) and Brian Eno (specifically Before And After Science, which also gets a huge nod here) and Joni Mitchell and Charles Mingus and Esperanza Spalding and Urbandy and Cydny while poising these moments into one fashion.

It feels good to finally release something new here, something that I can call my own, without feeling like I'm trying too hard. Some might say it barely sounds like I'm trying at all. And I would thank those someones for saying that.
